An archives crawl is a free event that allows participants to visit several archives, special collection libraries, and other historical organizations in one fun-filled afternoon. Crawlers have the opportunity to view an assortment of unique documents and objects while interacting with staff from each institution. All ages are welcome.
The San Francisco Archives Crawl is a little different from other crawls in that the host sites are not within walking distance from one another. There are two main sites with multiple institutions represented at each. See How to Crawl for more information.
Will I get to see original records?
Some of our institutions will have original documents and objects on display, while others may have high-quality facsimiles. All will offer a fascinating peek into California history!
Can I take photographs?
Yes, provided you do not use flash. Be sure to use #SFArchivesCrawl when sharing your discoveries on social media.
Are there special rules or guidelines while crawling?
Because you’ll be seeing one-of-a-kind materials, there are some basic guidelines we’ll want you to follow. First, make sure to wash your hands. We don’t want future generations wondering about sticky fingerprints left on the paper. Next, leave the food and drink outside and keep ink pens stashed away. Depending on the location, you may be asked to check your bag or put it in a locker provided free of charge. Finally, you might be asked to wear cotton or nitrile gloves if handling an especially delicate item. Consider it a perfect photo opportunity!
How can I learn more about archives?
The archivists at the crawl will be happy to answer any questions you might have. You can also visit the Society of American Archivists’ What Are Archives? page for a basic overview.
And most importantly. . . have fun!
